Help Create Safe Spaces for Men to Walk, Talk and Connect

What it means to be a MenWalkTalk Walk Leader

Every week, MenWalkTalk walks help men feel less alone, build connections, and take steps towards better wellbeing.

MenWalkTalk Walk Leaders play a vital role in their local communities, hosting regular, welcoming walks where men can talk openly, feel supported, and build meaningful connections.

What the role involves

Leading a walk takes commitment, consistency, and some local promotion.

We’ll support you with training, resources, and promotion, but the long-term success of a walk relies on the Walk Leader’s:

  • time
  • reliability
  • willingness to help the group grow

You don’t need professional experience — just a willingness to show up consistently and walk alongside others.

Before you apply, please take a moment to reflect

  • Can you commit to leading a walk regularly and reliably?
  • Are there any upcoming changes that may affect your availability?
  • Are you comfortable promoting the walk locally to help it establish and grow?

This is a long-term volunteer role, rather than a one-off opportunity. We ask applicants to consider carefully whether this feels right for them at this time.

How we support our volunteers

We invest significantly in every MenWalkTalk volunteer - typically over £500 per person, which includes:

  • Mental Health First Aid training
  • Online learning and ongoing support
  • A MenWalkTalk hoodie and polo shirt
  • First aid kit, insurance, and expenses
  • Walk listings on our website and CRM
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Programme

As a small charity with part-time staff and limited resources, it’s important to us that volunteers feel confident and ready to commit before applying. In return, we offer a supportive environment where you’re valued, equipped, and never expected to manage things alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

This role may be a good fit if you’re comfortable committing long-term, enjoy supporting others, and can be reliable even when life gets busy.
If you’re unsure about availability right now, or want something more flexible, scroll down to see other ways to get involved.

  • You don’t need to be a counsellor or mental health professional
  • You’re not expected to fix problems or give advice
  • You’re not responsible for managing crises alone

MenWalkTalk is about peer support, connection, and walking alongside others

Safeguarding matters
MenWalkTalk has clear safeguarding policies and reporting processes in place. All volunteers are trained in boundaries and know exactly what to do if a concern arises. You’ll always be supported by the wider team.

More ways to get involved

Not sure leading a walk is right for you? You can still get involved.

If leading a walk doesn’t feel like the right fit, you can volunteer as a Community Networker and help MenWalkTalk by:

  • Promoting MenWalkTalk in your local area
  • Building relationships with local partners and businesses
  • Raising awareness through word of mouth or social media

This is a great way to support our mission, using your strengths, with a more flexible commitment.

success stories

“I was at rock bottom when I found MenWalkTalk. I didn’t know what to expect, but just turning up and walking with other blokes who ‘got it’ was a lifeline. It’s helped me open up and feel like myself again.”
–Tom,  Walk Participant

“Becoming a walk leader gave me purpose again. It’s not about fixing anyone, it’s just about showing up, listening, and walking side by side.”
- Matt, Walk Leader

“It sounds simple, but it’s powerful. No pressure to talk, but the option is always there. I’ve met mates for life through this group.”
– Hugh, Walk Participant

“It’s helped me just as much as it helps the guys who turn up. It’s a space where we can all be a bit more real, without judgement.”
– Mike, Walk Leader

“It was really good to be present, even just for a couple of hours. What stood out was how important it is to approach men directly—they often won’t come to you. Their wives and partners were especially positive and encouraging when they heard what we do. A few men even opened up about their own mental health and recognised the value in what MenWalkTalk offers. Being part of that felt really meaningful.”
– Dom, Community Networker, MenWalkTalk

“I remember one guy who messaged us saying he was really anxious about coming to his first walk, he almost didn’t show up. After the walk, he emailed to say how welcomed he felt and how much lighter he felt just from being around others who understood. It was a big step for him and now he’s a regular. Stories like that remind us why we do what we do.”
